- Experts from S2 Grupo have pointed out that behind false news a cyberattack can hide.
- The objective of cybercriminals can range from affecting electoral or business processes to the spread of malware that affects the continuity of a business, for example.
Valencia, October 29, 2018.- S2 Grupo, a Valencian company specializing in cybersecurity and cyber-intelligence, has pointed out that in the last quarter of 2018 one of the main challenges of cybersecurity is to combat “fake news”. In this regard, company experts have stressed that the speed of the spread of false news through the Internet, mainly in social networks, is being used by cybercriminals to carry out more sophisticated attacks and that can have a greater impact on reputation of organizations and, even, in the continuity of business.
“Today, behind a spread of false news a cyber attack may be orchestrated and it is important that we become aware of this because as we share this news, we will be collaborating with cybercriminals. On November 6, a new electoral process begins in the US and it is very likely that, in relation to it, a whole campaign of fake news will emerge in social networks, for example. We must bear in mind that one way to attack in digital media is to use the information that is disclosed to achieve a specific goal“, said José Rosell, managing-partner of S2 Grupo.
“Eradicating this type of false news is complicated. The first step should be to raise awareness among the population about the importance of being aware of what information they share, where it comes from and if they are sure they can give it credit. Usually, the more shocking the news is the more motivated the sharing process is and that is the hook that used by fake news. Therefore, when faced with really striking news that does not come from a reliable source, it is advisable to be very careful when sharing and making it viral because we could be collaborating, unknowingly, with the campaign orchestrated by a cybercrime group“, said Miguel A. Juan, managing-partner of S2 Grupo.
As for the objectives that can be pursued through false news, experts from the cybersecurity company have highlighted that there may be several: affect the results of electoral processes, influence the strategic decisions of large companies or corporations whether public or private, attack personal or business reputation or viralize the spread of malware that may contain such news through a link that invites you to read more about that news, for example.
In this sense, S2 Grupo has highlighted that cyber attacks are currently very common through “hybrid campaigns”. These are more sophisticated attacks that allow the target to be achieved in a more subtle way by combining different mechanisms such as a fake news and a ransomware cyber attack, for example. First, one of them would be set in motion and that would make the cybersecurity team involved put all their attention on solving it. Meanwhile, criminals could take advantage to start the second action by taking advantage of this situation
For all these reasons, fake news has become a major problem that affects society as a whole.
