Europe, with its focus on security and user experience, faces the risk of losing competitiveness against the more aggressive strategies of China and the U.S. To counter this, the European Union is promoting initiatives such as the Data Act, AI Act, and Chips Act, with a special emphasis on Software-Defined Vehicles (SdV)—a model that shifts critical functions from hardware to software, enabling greater flexibility, remote updates, and adaptability.
This shift represents a key transformation for the industry, enhancing user experience and generating new business opportunities. However, its implementation entails significant challenges, such as the increasing reliance on software throughout the vehicle's entire lifecycle—from design and manufacturing to maintenance. This requires the adoption of new technologies and methodologies, as well as specialized workforce training.
Additionally, the growing interconnectivity and complexity of modern vehicles present critical challenges in security, privacy, and reliability, increasing their exposure to cyberattacks. This makes the adoption of robust cybersecurity measures and risk management strategies essential. Likewise, validating these systems is crucial to ensuring interoperability, fault tolerance, and compliance with security standards, which demands innovative testing methodologies and a unified regulatory framework.
